Yakut heroic epos Olonkho has an ancient origin. It is supposed to have come into existence not later than in VIII - IX centuries A.D..

The Yakut heroic epos is widely recognized in the world, that is illustrated by the fact that in November, 2005 UNESCO proclaimed Olonkho a masterpiece of the world oral and non-material heritage of mankind.

On December, 29th, 2005 the President of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) V.A.Shtyrov issued the Decree «On measures in preservation, studying and distribution of Yakut heroic epos Olonkho». The period from 2006 till 2015 is declared to be the Decade of Olonkho in the Republic. Bill on state support of Olonkho and specified-purpose program on Olonkho is being developed.
