GAVRIL KURILOV Yukagir poet The mother's face
"You don't have a photo of your mamma," - my friend said to me one day. "Look around, — I answered with a smile,— Look at hills and look at lakes. Here lie my native wrinkled plains — They are my mother's face! Along the hills streams run, as if blood in veins They're the veins in my mother's hands! Grassy eyelashes of calm lakes Are my mother's tender gaze! And a white wall of moss Is the grey hair of my mother! — You are mistaken, my dear friend, That is my mother's photo! — I said. Look, my friends, look at, please, How beautiful my mother is!
NICOLAY KALITIN Evenki poet The white cranes' dance
Nature is the Miracles' mother In the taiga time flies quickly. If your give heart to her at once You' re undestand the taiga's secret
The dense taiga is a friend To men, who have lived here a long time, But only the rare man Can see the white cranes' dance.
The legend tells of an ancient truth: He, why's the most brave and sharp-sighted, Who can pass all the taiga — few Can see this white cranes' dancing
I didn't spare myself. I tired, I' ve learned all habits of the beasts. I traveled over all the taiga From childhood rubbed my feet.
I'm wandering on the hunter's path — Wait and believe in this myth: When the white cranes will start their dance, The sacred dance before me? But only my verses fly, Like a cranes' wedge along sky, They are flying to my native house. They are my fate, my heart's need, As if the white cranes — indeed They're whirling in an ancient waltz.
